Marathon runner

Day +46

Yesterday was a trying day as Rylie continued to need more respiratory intervention. The doctors switched her oxygen to a hi-flow system that mixes air and oxygen to help pressurize her lungs to assist in her breathing. This seemed to relax her. The primary concern is her respiratory rate. She is breathing pretty rapidly. The room was a flurry of activity with nurses, doctors, and respiratory therapists evaluating Rylie and bringing in other equipment to help Rylie breath if it became necessary. Scary stuff.

Rylie was otherwise happy. She finally went down for a nap around 4:00, but her respiratory rate continued to climb. The doctors ordered a bipap machine which requires Rylie wear a mask. This obviously woke up the sleeping little girl. The therapist couldn't get the mask within a foot of Rylie's face without her protesting intensely. However, Rylie did perk up and play again for several hours in the evening.

Last night went pretty well for Rylie and Jade. This morning the doctors are happy with Rylie's blood gas numbers, which means her body is compensating for the high respiratory rate. The doctors said it is the same physiological effort that takes place in marathon runners. The problem is a person cannot continue this effort indefinitely. She needs to rally today to avoid a possible bronchoscopy tomorrow.  The bronchosopy may be needed since we still don't know if this issue is caused by the residual affects of the adenovirus or if there is something new on board. So let's all put on our rally caps and pray for improved respiratory status for Rylie. Let's get to the finish line of this marathon within a marathon and get back in the recovery and rebuilding race. Good thing our little marathon runner is Rylie Strong!

Proverbs 3:5–8

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones."
